Dental Crowns Q & A
What are dental crowns?
A dental crown is a cap on your tooth that protects the underlying structure while providing an exterior that blends in seamlessly with your existing teeth.
Dental crowns are typically made from porcelain, ceramics, or a metal/porcelain combination. The location of your crown often dictates the choice of material: Back teeth require stronger materials, while your front teeth need more of an aesthetic solution.
Why do I need a dental crown?
Dr. Vivian Mauriello and Dr. Joseph Mauriello frequently recommend dental crowns for the following issues:
- To cover a tooth that’s been compromised by extensive dental work
- To cover a misshapen or discolored tooth
- To provide support for bridges
- To restore a fractured tooth, or protect your tooth from fracturing
- To cover a dental implant
Ultimately, dental crowns provide a solution that addresses both form and function, allowing you to maintain the overall integrity of your teeth.
What is the procedure for getting a dental crown?
Because dental crowns are custom made to fit your mouth, you need two visits to Mauriello Dental to complete the procedure. During your first visit, either Dr. Joseph Mauriello or Dr. Vivian Mauriello prepares your tooth and takes images and impressions of the tooth -- or teeth -- which they send to a lab where your replacement tooth is custom manufactured.
Before you leave the office, Dr. Joseph or Vivian Mauriello places a temporary cap over the area for minimal disruption while you wait for your new crown.
When your new crown is ready, you head back to Mauriello Dental to have it put in. To ensure proper function, Drs. Vivian or Joseph Mauriello check that the new crown fits in snugly with your surrounding teeth and that your bite isn’t affected. Once your dentist finds the perfect position, they use a special adhesive to attach the dental crown to your tooth.
How long do dental crowns last?
Dental crowns require the same quality of care that you provide your natural teeth, which means daily brushing, flossing, and rinsing. If you keep up your daily maintenance, as well as your regularly-scheduled visits to Mauriello Dental, your crown can last 5 to 15 years.
